Hidden wilderness gems near you

This weekend I took a trip to the Jean Lafitte Wetland Trace in.... well. Jean Lafitte. Its an amazing hike on boardwalks over a 41-acre site through the moss covered cypress swamp. It has covered pavilions, benches and scenic overlooks.

It is a photographer's dream ans well as a great place just to get out and experience these marshy lowlands.

Lafitte Trace isn't the only spot to commune with nature close to the city. There is Woodlands Conservancy in Belle Chasse. The 630-acre Woodlands Trail contains over 10 miles of natural trails for hiking, bird watching, photography and other non-motorized activities. The trail system meanders along a spill-bank that provides scenic views of wetland areas and leads to a grouping of World War II Ammunition Magazines.

Both locations are an easy drive from anywhere in the city and a great way to get out of the city for a few minutes and enjoy the beauties of nature.
