Fat's Domino's "Walkin' to New Orleans" broke into Billboard's top-ten list. The song went on to sell over two million copies. The record was a hit, released on Imperial Records, reaching #6 on the pop chart and #2 on the R&B chart

The Expulsion of the Acadians, also known as the Great Upheaval, the Great Expulsion and Le Grand Dérangement, was the forced removal by the British of the Acadian people from the present day Canadian Maritime provinces of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and also part of the US state of Maine—an area also known as Acadie. The first wave of the expulsion began on this day, with the Bay of Fundy Campaign during the French and Indian War. The British ordered the expulsion of the Acadians after the Battle of Beausejour..

Singer, songwriter and arranger Joe Jones was born in New Orleans on this day. Jones is also generally credited with discovering The Dixie Cups and worked with B.B. King. As a singer, Jones' greatest hit was the Top Five 1960 R&B hit "You Talk Too Much", which also reached #3 on the pop chart.

On this date in (1794)

the members of the Cabildo were convoked in extraordinary session by the Governor Carondelet to discuss means for repairing the levee and meat market which were damaged by the river during a hurricane on the night of the 10th instant. They decided to hear an opinion of Don Gilberto Guillemard, Major of the Post, and Don Carlos Laveau Trudeau, Surveyor, which will be discussed at the next session of the Cabildo. At the next meeting, it was agreed that repairs to the market should be started at once, with Don Francisco de la Barre to supervise the work. The levee to be in charge of the Major, and the work submitted to bids..

On this date in (1988)

The Riverfront streetcar line was built along a section of the river in an area with many amenities catering to tourists and opened this day. the first new streetcar route to be unveiled in New Orleans in 62 years. The line runs 2 miles from Thalia Street at the upper end of the New Orleans Convention Center to the downriver (far) end of the French Quarter at the foot of Esplanade Avenue. Unlike the other three lines, it travels on an exclusive right of way, along the river levee beside New Orleans Belt Railway tracks. Officially, the Riverfront Line is designated Route 2.
